He is a sitar student of Pandit Arvind Parikh (senior-most disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan) and travels to Mumbai, India whenever possible for tuition.
Has also studied sitar with Dharambir Singh and Mehboob Nadeem and attended workshops/summer schools with khyal vocalists Rajan and Sajan Mishra, sarod player Buddhadev Das Gupta, tabla player Sharda Sahai and sitarist Budhaditya Mukherjee.
Although a trained classical sitarist, James is involved with Jazz and a number of fusion projects and non-Indian studio work.
